On the 9th of June 08, EFVI had the possibility to present DICOMP-S.net at a workshop for ICT and e-Inclusion Experts from New EU countrys, hosted by the Technical University of Kosice (Slovakia).

MonAMI is funded by the EU 6th framework programme IST (Information Society Technologies) and deals with the growing age of the European society.
Information from the webpage:
”Year 2050 – a high percent of the population in the EU is 80 years or older. The largest group is women 80 years plus. The elderly are active, computer literate and want to age well in the information society, maintaining their quality of life. The large number of elderly implies a large cost for the society, a real challenges.
Technology can make empowered and autonomous living possible by providing help in daily life, safety and security at home, contacts with others, social integration and fun.
The MonAMI project will demonstrate that accessible, useful services for elderly persons and persons with disabilities living at home can be delivered in mainstream systems and platforms. This will be done in close cooperation with users and by involving key mainstream actors throughout the whole process.”

NCBI presentation of DICOMP-S.net at KINDLY VICS (25th May 2008)

Kindly VICS, the vision impairment computer society were hosting a conference and offered NCBI a place to present DICOMP-S.net. VICS is a multi-faceted group with members nationwide and in both Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland.

VICS organises open days, training, a regular CD-based audio magazine and an email-based support list for its members.  It is also a special interest subgroup of the Irish Computer Society (ICS).

Some of the work that VICS is involved includes: Web Testing and Standards, Lobbying, Research etc.  Presenting DICOMP-S.net at their annual conference was, indeed, a very good alternative to "Seeing better Ireland", which was unfortunately cancelled. At VICS NCBI had the chance talking directly to vision impaired computer users and people who aim to increase the usage of IT among the vision impaired community and accessibility to the world of IT for people with vision impairments.

Foto Kindly VICS 01

Many of the people attending this conference work for government departments work in third level institutes and many other influential areas of the Irish workforce. NCBI had a captive audience who can take back the information about Thunder to their workplace and disseminate further the information among those who would find it beneficial.

More information about VICS can be found on the website http://www.vicsireland.org/

Foto Kindly VICS 02

NCBI had planned to use a major exhibition in June 08 as the national dissemination vehicle. SEEING BETTER IRELAND - an Exhibition of Information Technology, Resources, Equipment and Services for people with sight loss in Ireland is a biennial event and NCBI chooses a theme to focus on at each event.

This year NCBI had chosen Thunder and the eLearning project DICOMP-S.net.  Unfortunately, due to circumstances outside control, the event was cancelled with very little notice owing to difficulties with a hosting organisation.

Because of the short notice of the cancellation and the fact that the project was
an end NCBI couldn’t  arrange a separate event.

Distribution of the project newletter via E.N.T.E.R (January 2008)

DICOMP-S.net used the E.N.T.E.R platform to distribute information about the ongoing in the project as well as to inform about the third transnational meeting in London. The European Network for Transfer and Exploitation of EU Project Results (E.N.T.E.R.) is a non-profit making association officially registered in Graz, Austria.

E.N.T.E.R. was founded to serve four main purposes:

  • To support European Union strategies through the dissemination and valorisation of project results funded by European programmes for the benefit of all European citizens.
  • To offer EU project coordinators the opportunity to disseminate information about their projects and their results to a broad community of interested organisations and bodies.
  • To give European citizens and organisations the opportunity to regularly receive information about developments and results in the EU project community.
  • To give interested organisations the opportunity to find EU project groups and consortia for exchanging know-how and developing innovative project ideas.
In order to fulfil its purposes, E.N.T.E.R. connects virtually a constantly growing number of members from all over Europe. The entire European community is hence represented in its diversity in terms of nationalities, regions, economic sectors and organisational forms.

Member organisations are ministries, legislative bodies, social partners, associations and other networks, private organisations, SMEs, NGOs, universities, training organisations, schools, environmental organisations and social bodies to mention but a few. UNSS Presentation of the project DICOMP-S.net (23rd and 24th November 2007)

On the 23rd  and 24th of  November 2007 in the city of Kosice there was organized a seminar about the screen reader Thunder. Participants were members and employees of slovak blind and partially Sighted Union from the whole country and other interested people.

The software was presented and compared with other screenreaders like NVDA and JAWS. Participants recognized it as a useful tool especially for people with need for basic access to electronic information like elderly or people without higher educational or professional goals. They highly appreciated its availability free of charge.

There were identified two main problems:
- there is no free speech synthesiser for the Slovak language with acceptable quality for most of elderly people or other beginers and
- there is need to use special browser WEBBIE for browsing internet.

Screenreader.net CIC at the E-Democracy 2007
London 8th November
2007

Logo_EDemocracy07

This is now an annual conference bringing together 150 representatives of local and Central Government along with commercial suppliers. The Thunder stand or Roger Wilson-Hinds, presenting the project DICOMP-S.net, was well attended and the highlight was a visit from Andrew Miller M.P. who is Chair of the UK Parliamentary IT and Communications Committee.

He was, of course, delighted that people could listen to his own website and catch up with what he has been up to over recent weeks. Roger Wilson-Hinds was also able to demonstrate to him that a blind person could familiarise with his speeches and writings. He made the case that free talking software is at the heart of inclusion and e-democracy for poorer people who can’t see to read and write.
This was recorded at the E-democracy conference in London.

Since 1992, the Directors of Screenreader.net have been supplying hardware, software and specialist tuition to blind and visually impaired computer users in the UK. We have come to realise that it is in the main the articulate, wealthier, Government or Charity-supported or already working minority who have benefited. We wanted to make sense of phrases such as “inclusion”, “A level playing field” and “IT for All”. We worked closely with Sensory Software Ltd to develop the Thunder free talking screenreader software package.

Foto ValorVIP 02

We will describe its main benefits and features and outline where we see future developments and applications to meet the needs of blind and visually impaired users facing particularly difficult challenges.

Involved parties:        Screenreader.net; Sensory Software Ltd; Dicomp-s.net project partners.
